Project: Hoyt Peak Trail Maintenance and Kiosk Construction
Location: Hoyt Peak, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Utah

Description: On August 15, volunteers joined Tread Lightly! and the Heber–Kamas Ranger District for a full day of trail maintenance and visitor-service improvements on the designated full-sized vehicle route to Hoyt Peak. The day began with a meet-up at the Heber–Kamas Ranger Station before traveling to the project site, where vegetation had become significantly overgrown. The narrowed corridor increased the risk of vehicle damage and made the trail more challenging for users.

Volunteers dedicated much of the day to trimming, brushing, and delimbing along the route, successfully widening the trail corridor to ensure safe, responsible, and enjoyable access for all users. In addition to the vegetation clearing, the team installed a new post and route marker in a location where signage had previously been missing. This improvement provides clearer guidance for visitors and supports proper navigation within the trail system.

After completing the fieldwork, the group returned to the Ranger District Shop to assemble two large cedar kiosks. Once installed at the Marion entrance to Hoyt Peak, these kiosks will offer maps, educational materials, and important visitor information, helping promote responsible recreation and enhance the overall user experience.

This productive and rewarding project showcased the power of partnership and volunteerism, improving both trail conditions and long-term visitor resources. Tread Lightly! extends its appreciation to the volunteers and partners whose dedication made this effort possible.

Thank you to the partners who made this possible:

“Volunteering with Tread Lightly! was not only informative, it was extremely fulfilling. As a hunter and outdoor enthusiast, I want to help protect and manage the incredible outdoors we are all so fortunate to access and experience. I plan to volunteer again and am proud to now be associated with such a great cause and group.”-Stephanie Oberlin – Volunteer

“Had a good time doing some trail maintenance in the Uintas with Kabe from Tread Lightly! I feel like performing this type of work in an area I like to visit gave me a new sense of ownership in our public lands. Highly recommended volunteering with the Forest Service and supporting Tread Lightly!”-Ben Sims – Volunteer
