Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Mt. Carrie OHV Trail Maintenance

Project: Mt. Carrie OHV Trail Maintenance
Location: Florida

Description: This project was funded by Can-Am Off-Road. Can-Am has committed to funding trail stewardship projects in partnership with Tread Lightly! to help maintain and improve access to public lands and off-road trails.

On November 20, 2024, five Osceola National Forest Rangers began trail remediation and preparation of the Mt. Carrie OHV Trail with support from Tread Lightly! and Can-Am Off-Road.

During peak OHV season, it can be challenging to safely keep up with all trail grooming, remediation and maintenance that busy OHV trails require. For staff and rider safety it is generally easier to do this work during the off-season.

The forest team installed two OHV Trailhead signs and reflectors along parking-area boundary fencing. They also filled three 30-gallon trash bags with weeds and tall grass trimmings from picnic and kiosk areas. On a future workday, the team will install USFS bear-proof trash cans on Can-Am-funded concrete slabs as well as two roadside approach signs reading “OHV Trailhead 1,000 feet ahead.”

This work is an extension of project work in June, sponsored and funded by USFS partners Tread Lightly! and Can-Am. The culmination of all this work has provided valuable beautification, functionality, and responsible riding education to the OHV riders in Osceola National Forest.

Thank you to the partners who made this possible:

“We just can’t thank Can-Am and Tread Lightly! enough for the incredible upgrades, repairs and signage provided to our popular Mt Carrie OHV Trailhead. This support will help us to not only keep the trailhead beautiful, but to also help educate trail users on this historic location, our protected animals in the forest and responsible motorized recreation behavior.”- Matthew Chopp, Recreation Program Manager, Osceola NF

“Thank you Can-Am Off-road for your support for all the work in Osceola National Forest Mt. Carrie Trailhead. In total, the forest was able to install new kiosks and signage, new perimeter fencing to protect vegetation, install new signs on the USFS road, pour cement pads for new bear-proof boxes, and provide general maintenance, trimming and mowing. We can’t do all this wonderful work without our amazing partners. Thank You.”- Lowell Eckart, Southeast Program Manager, Tread Lightly!
