Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Uwharrie National Forest Kiosk Sign Installation

Project: Uwharrie National Forest Kiosk Sign Installation
Project Location: North Carolina

Description: On November 7th, nine volunteers from Yokohama Tire Company joined Tread Lightly! and the Uwharrie National Forest Team to install new educational and responsible recreation signs on seven kiosks on the Badin Lake OHV Trail system.

This trail system contains 17 miles of shared use OHV trails supporting everything from motorcycles to full-size off-road vehicles. With multiple added obstacles and several very challenging natural trail sections, the Badin OHV trails offer something for every motorized user.

The trail system is generally open from April 1 to December 15 allowing the forest to perform necessary trail repair and remediation during the winter and spring months. During the open season, the trails are open 24 hours a day, so riders have plenty of time to enjoy this trail system. The volunteers picked up trash at each of the trailhead locations where the kiosks were located, but thankfully people have been doing their part to keep these areas very clean, so trash was very minimal.

Thank you to the following partners for their support:

“Thank you to our great partner, Yokohama Tires, for helping to fund these kiosk signs in Uwharrie National Forest. The trail system in Uwharrie has seven kiosk units at various trailheads and access points on the Badin Lake OHV trail system. But all of those units have had old, faded signage on them if there was anything at all. Thanks to Yokohama, all seven kiosks have fresh, bright signage that tells users how to ride responsibly, what vehicles are allowed on the trails and how to secure the necessary permits for access. Most of the kiosk units also carry a map of the OHV trail system to make sure riders know where they are in the forest and where each trail leads. Thank you, Yokohama, for helping us Protect the Adventure and Protect the Fun!”- Lowell Eckart, Southeast Program Manager, Tread Lightly!

“We partnered with Tread Lightly! on several successful projects this year, including the recent kiosk signage installation project at Uwharrie National Forest in Troy, North Carolina. It went really well and several employees at our local Yokohama Technical Center pitched in. We’re always glad to be assisting Tread Lightly! with projects like this and other much-needed activities such as forest clean-ups, building infrastructure, trail remediation and major off-road post-event cleanups. We support Tread Lightly!’s ongoing mission to protect off-road trail access and public lands.”- Alan Holtschneider, Yokohama’s director of marketing
