11 Jun Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Jeep Beach Coastal Cleanup
Project: Jeep Beach Coastal Cleanup
Location: Daytona Beach, Florida
Description: During Jeep Beach 2024, Tread Lightly! hosted six daily beach cleanups at different locations throughout the week, kicking the first project off on Earth Day, April 22. In total, 312 volunteers worked throughout the week to clean up trash, cigarette butts, plastic bottles and caps and even remnants of hotel damage from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in 2022. In total, volunteers cleaned up 2,652 pounds of trash, improving 12 miles of oceanfront Daytona Beach.
We’d like to thank the attendees who took time from the Jeep Beach event activities to leave the beach and community better, 17 of whom volunteered multiple days! Each morning was a mini showcase of Jeeps, bringing together 154 vehicles at the meetup locations. Volunteers received a reusable mesh trash bag created by Spiderwebshade specifically for the Coastal Cleanup.
A local well-known restaurant called Racings North Turn in Ponce Inlet volunteered their parking lot for the last cleanup staging location so that Jeeps could gather for the project. It was a wonderful turnout of volunteers for this first-time project supported by FOX Trail Trust, MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, Bajio Sunglasses, Tread Lightly! and Jeep Beach.
Thank you to the partners who made this possible:
“What a huge success for the first year of this week-long cleanup during Jeep Beach to have over 300 volunteers and more than 150 Jeeps participate was incredible. We cleaned over 12 miles of beach to help keep Daytona Beach beautiful and accessible to beach goers and vehicle drivers (during low tides) was awesome to see. There was an incredible passion for this effort from volunteers and we had many who came back several mornings to pitch in. Thank you to our Tread Lightly! partner FOX Trail Trust for helping to support our Tread Lightly! portion of the effort! I’m looking forward to next year!”-Lowell Eckart, Tread Lightly! Southeast Program Manager
“Jeep Beach is no secret anymore! With over 225,000 people and 25,000 Jeeps descending on Daytona Beach, it’s an epic gathering! But here’s the deal: we’re not just here to party. Cleanliness and care for our environment are big deals for us! Each morning, we kick off with our Coastal Cleanups! We are so incredibly thankful for the team at Tread Lightly! for spearheading this endeavor. We watch the sun come up over the ocean each day as the Jeep community meets to make sure every bit of trash is picked up from beachgoers’ days before. While Jeep Beach is growing and evolving, our mission remains unchanged: leave this place better than we found it. THANK YOU, Tread Lightly!, for your partnership in this.” – Charlene Greer, Jeep Beach
