26 Nov Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Wolverine Trail Fencing Installation
Project: Wolverine Trail Fencing Installation
Location: Utah
Description: This project was funded by Can-Am Off-Road. Can-Am has committed to funding trail stewardship projects in partnership with Tread Lightly! to help maintain and improve access to public lands and off-road trails.
On October 5, 2024, with the help of one volunteer, Tread Lightly! supported trail maintenance in the Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District.
Over several days, a post-and-rail fence was erected to help protect trail users and sensitive areas on the Wolverine ATV Trail. The trail is 9.7 miles of designated trails restricted to 50” or less. There is an area of this trail system that runs parallel to an established road and the narrow natural barrier between the two has been damaged.
The established road also has blind turns leading into and out of the area which poses a safety risk to users leaving the ATV trail. The post-and-rail fence addresses both the safety risk and degradation of the natural barrier.
On day one, volunteers unloaded lumber and positioned it along the route. Next, they used an auger attachment on a skid steer and began digging holes. Each hole then had to be cleared of rocks and material. They then set 40 poles, filling the holes with dirt and tamping the area to make sure they were sturdy. On day two, they focused on installing two rails between each post, totaling over 400 linear feet of fencing.
Thank you to the partners who made this possible:
“This is my third project of the year with Tread Lightly!. I love getting to know the people who work with the USFS. They work so hard to maintain our public lands. I just hope I can keep supporting them by volunteering my time.”-Trever Balls, volunteer
