Tread Lightly! Distributes Thousands of Free Posters to Reinforce Outdoor Ethics

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (July 23, 2013) – Tread Lightly! is proud to announce the completion of the second year of our Educational Poster Giving Program, our annual campaign to distribute free educational posters to land management agencies and recreational communities promoting responsible recreation on America’s lands and waterways. Since the program’s launch, Tread Lightly! has distributed more than 3,100 posters throughout the nation to our organizational partners and members.

Through this program Tread Lightly! has provided natural resource managers and recreational communities the opportunity to customize and receive free educational posters to place on information bulletin boards and kiosks at trailheads or in visitor centers.

Tread Lightly! offered a new feature in the 2013 poster program — a customized QR code that allows recreationists to link directly to maps with designated route travel information or a recreation area’s website.

Land managers were also given the opportunity to customize the messaging by state – for example, “RIDE ON Utah” or “Respected Access is Open Access in Arizona.” The posters were printed on a lightweight PVC laminate material with UV rated ink to extend life of the educational resource in the field.

The primary purpose for providing these posters is to help heighten the recreation community’s sense of good stewardship by communicating responsible behaviors and providing tips to help minimize environmental impacts and social conflicts – all while ensuring consistency across boundaries, nationwide, using research based, issue-specific messages.

“This year’s program was an incredible success thanks to our partners, Yamaha OHV Access Initiative, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Dallas Safari Club,” said Lori McCullough, Tread Lightly!’s executive director. “We were able to design, print and distribute more than 1,500 posters for placement this year and, collectively, since early 2012, we’ve been able to distribute posters to nearly all 50 states.”

“I am so appreciative of Tread Lightly!’s commitment to educate the public about the ethics of conduct that we must all adopt to conserve our nation’s public lands and protect access to these resources,” said Jess Hancock, OHV trail manager/snow ranger – Dixie National Forest. “Tread Lightly! plays a crucial role in educating the public on the proper ethics regarding all forms of travel on our public lands.  The educational poster program has provided us with a great tool for getting the Tread Lightly! message out to our visitors. Putting a QR code that allows our visitors to download an official travel map from these posters has been a huge success!”

If you missed this year’s program you can still order customized posters through Tread Lightly!’s online store.
