Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Big Island Jeep Club Cleanup

Project: Big Island Jeep Club Cleanup
Project #35/50
State: Hawaii

Description: This project was funded by the Quadratec 50 for 50 Initiative. Together with Tread Lightly!, Quadratec has committed to fund a project to improve off-road trails and public lands in each state over 24 months.

On November 19, 2023, 37 volunteers from the Big Island Jeep Club came to the aid of an unnamed stretch of trail on the Big Island of Hawaii that has been burdened with illegal dumping. Through their efforts over the course of four hours, 7,000 pounds of trash were collected and removed from the area. Highlights included several mattresses, two stoves and a washing machine. All told the volunteers filled and removed over 250 55-gallon trash bags. Thank you to the Big Island Jeep Club for doing its part to protect the adventure!

Thank you to the following partners for their support:

“For our event we did a cleanup on an off-road trail. We hauled a minimum of 250 bags of trash as well as 6 loads of large miscellaneous items.

We had 34 adult Jeepers and 3 kids come out to do the cleanup. We used 4 Gladiators for the bagged trash and used a F-250 to load up appliances, mattresses, and other large scrap metal items as well as furniture. Unfortunately we lost count of how many trips we made to the transfer station but it was A LOT!

We made a HUGE dent in the area. It was very rewarding for all of us. We really, really enjoy doing these kinds of events. The Club really likes giving back to the ʻĀina. There were several people that saw what we were doing and stopped to thank us which was really nice also.”-Jenn Corso, Big Island Jeep Club
