Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Laurel Fork Campground Restoration

Project: Laurel Fork Campground Restoration
Location: West Virginia

Description: On September 5th, 21 volunteers joined together with leadership from Mountain State Overland and Tread Lightly! to help the Greenbrier Ranger District of the United States Forest Service perform restoration projects in the beautiful Laurel Fork Campground.

Projects on this workday included pouring four cement pads for placement of bear-proof trash bins, repainting of the bear-proof bins, painting the campground pavilion and cleaning out all the campfire rings. The event concluded with the installation of some new signs and signposts at the entrance area of the campground.

Volunteers camped the night prior to the project day sharing stories of their favorite overlanding trips and discussing responsible motorized recreation behavior. The project was the brainchild of Mountain State Overland who created this project day as part of a long weekend of overland camping, education, and vendor engagement at the Adventure X Event that followed the restoration project. This group of volunteers left an already beautiful campground cleaned up, painted and repaired for future years of campers.

Thank you to the partners who made this possible:

“We really are thankful to have Tread Lightly! support our efforts advocating responsible adventure tourism in West Virginia. To all the volunteers – Our thanks and gratitude for all of you that helped the MSO Team execute this workday dedicated to minimizing our impact while promoting safe and responsible adventures in the Mountain State.”- Jason Specht, Creator/Producer, Mountain State Overland

“The efforts at Laurel Fork Campground by Tread Lightly! and Mountain State Overlanders last week has provided a longevity of amenities for users of the campground. It also has allowed the US Forest Service staff to focus on other important projects throughout the area.”- Sean R Sullivan, Forestry Technician (Recreation), Monongahela National Forest
