Project: Big Creek Single Track Bridge Build
Location: Idaho
Description: From June 24–27, 2026, a diverse coalition of outdoor recreation partners and volunteers came together to complete the construction of a new single-track bridge over Big Creek in Idaho. The project united backcountry horsemen, dirt bike riders, hikers, conservation organizations, youth crews, state and federal agencies, and local trail groups in a collaborative effort to improve trail sustainability while protecting critical aquatic habitat.
The bridge was successfully constructed in just two days, providing a durable crossing that diverts trail users out of Big Creek and safely routes them over the waterway. Prior to the bridge installation, trail users, including off-highway vehicles (OHVs), hikers, and equestrians, were required to ford the creek, resulting in impacts to sensitive stream habitat.
By eliminating the stream crossing, the project now protects critical spawning grounds for the endangered bull trout and other sensitive native fish species. The new bridge helps reduce sedimentation, minimizes disturbance to aquatic habitat, and supports long-term watershed health while maintaining access to this popular recreation trail.
This project serves as an outstanding example of how diverse recreation communities can work together toward a common conservation goal. Volunteers representing multiple trail user groups demonstrated that responsible recreation and natural resource protection go hand in hand.
