31 Jan Jackpot ATV Trailhead Area Improvements in Minnesota
STATUS: COMPLETED
PROJECT DURATION: 6/1/16 TO 6/15/16
Description from US Forest Service:
In 2014 the 24,000 square foot Jackpot ATV Trailhead parking area in Superior National Forest, Kawishiwi District, Ely, MN was grubbed out and surfaced with pit run gravel.
The continued project requires: 24,000 square feet of class 5 gravel to cover the existing pit run 210 square feet of class 5 gravel for the 35’x6′ trail leading to the handicapped accessible latrine 10 yards of pea gravel around 2 picnic tables and fire rings at a group gathering area 2 bollards to define the ATV trail as open to vehicles up to 65 inches in width, but not to full sized vehicles.
The intended outcome is to make the parking lot more stable for trucks pulling trailers; mitigating erosion from rain and also from vehicles sinking into the pit run and digging up ruts. The handicapped trail needs to be upgraded with more rock and less fill, the foot paths around the picnic tables and fire ring will be more secure and not erode into a muddy site, and having bollards will maintain the integrity of the AVT/UHV trail, denying access to full sized vehicles.
