Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Sumter National Forest Spring Sweep

Project: Sumter National Forest Spring Sweep
State: South Carolina

Description: On April 5, 13 volunteers, eight US Forest Service staff, and a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources employee, joined forces to support the annual Spring Sweep event. The volunteer team consisted of representatives from Trout Unlimited, Tread Lightly!, Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservancy plus local users of the trail and Chattooga River area. The group cleaned up the highway 76-gauge area, Pool Creek Road, Low Water Campground, Highway 28 fishing access areas, and Sutton’s Hole Road.

In all, about 30 tires and 1,200 lbs of trash were collected and disposed of properly.

Thank you to the partners who made this possible:

“What an amazing day with an incredible group of people executing a cleanup of multiple areas of the Chattooga and Sumter National Forest. We kicked off our day at the Chattooga River Access area of the Sumter National Forest where both river raft participants and kayak enthusiasts regularly gather to enjoy this beautiful river area. It is such a pleasure to see motorized and non-motorized organizations join forces to Protect the Adventure and Protect the Fun for all types of outdoor recreation.”-Lowell Eckart, Tread Lightly! Southeast Program Manager
