Tread Lightly! Impact Report: Top of the World Fencing and Kiosk Project

Project: Top of the World Fencing and Kiosk Project
State: Utah

Description: During the 2025 Easter Jeep Safari, Tread Lightly! successfully completed trail conservation  projects focused on protecting access to one of Moab’s most iconic OHV areas — Top of the World.

The projects spanned over two days with over 50 volunteers installing buck and rail fencing to help protect against trail braiding and the fabrication and installation of a new steel kiosk with updated educational signage and map.

The project days began by meeting volunteers at the Lions Park and Bike Path parking lot, before driving along the scenic Colorado River corridor to Dewey Bridge. Upon arrival, volunteers participated in a work and safety briefing before heading to the base of the Top of the World route, the main project site.

Top of the World is a renowned OHV destination known for its breathtaking overlook — a photo op featured widely across social media and trail guides. However, at the base of the trail, three separate routes have developed significant trail-braiding over time. This trail braiding has led to environmental degradation, including damage to native juniper trees and sensitive desert terrain.

To address these issues, volunteers worked together to install buck and rail fencing designed to clearly guide vehicle traffic and help prevent further damage to fragile areas. In addition to physical restoration efforts, a new informational sign and updated map were installed, which was mounted to a kiosk that was installed on-site. This kiosk will serve as an educational tool for future visitors, helping them navigate the area responsibly.

This project would not have been possible without partner support. Thank you to Yukon Gear & Axle, Jeep, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Red Rock 4-Wheelers, and every volunteer who gave their time and energy to help protect access to public lands.

“Tread Lightly’s trail restoration projects during Easter Jeep Safari is a highlight of the week.  It’s a tremendous opportunity to be part of preserving our off-road trails during one of the most iconic events in our community. Tread Lightly! has a truly great team and leads some of the most important work that will keep our public lands open to our motorized off-road community.  Not only can we protect the future of these trails, but we also get to do it working alongside so many passionate people who quickly become friends.  SEMA is thankful for the TL team’s work and are proud to be a part of their efforts.”-Karen Bailey Chapman, SEMA
